Lesson One: Drawing Animals using Chalk Pastels and Stencils 

 

For my lesson plan I am teaching the students to draw animals using pastels and stencils.

This project relates most closely to the Studio Habits of Mind: Express and Envision

 

Grade Level: Third Grade

 

Big Idea: Create a scene using animal shapes

 

Time Frame: 50 minutes

 

Mastery Objectives:

  • Students will learn to cut shapes out of paper to make stencils

  • Students will learn to apply pastel to paper using stencils

    • Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

    • Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

Materials:

 

  • Chalk Pastels, Colored Paper, White Paper, Pre-Cut Stencils, Scissors, Handout

 

Warm-Up/Mini-Lesson:

 

Show students PowerPoint Presentation of artwork for this lesson

 

  • Degas

  • Matisse

  • Banksy

 

Demonstrate use of materials

 

  • Cutting the stencils into animal shapes to make stencils

  • Apply pastel to paper using technique shown in mini-lesson

 

Guided Work:

            

  • Pass out handouts where students write their favorite animals and why they chose them

  • Pass out pastels, colored paper, white paper, pre-cut stencils, scissors

  • Cut white paper into animal shapes

  • Apply pastel using technique from mini-lesson
